Oakville Transit fares and who rides free
Checked October 2026
What a bus ride costs in Oakville depends less on how far you go than on how you pay. The single most useful thing to know is that Oakville Transit lets anyone 19 and under and anyone 65 and over ride free, but only if they tap a PRESTO card. Without the card, the same rider pays the cash fare.
Here is what Oakville Transit publishes:
- Adults, 20 to 64. $3.50 with PRESTO. $4 in cash. Oakville Transit adds that university, college and adult education students 20 years and over must pay adult fare, so turning 20 ends the free youth fare and there is no student rate behind it.
- Youth, 19 and under. Free with PRESTO. $4 in cash without it.
- Seniors, 65 and over. Free with PRESTO. $4 in cash without it.
- Children 12 and under. Free. They ride free by tapping a PRESTO card or by travelling with a parent or guardian, so a child this age does not need a card of their own when an adult is with them.
- Adult monthly pass. $147, loaded onto a PRESTO card.
Oakville Transit does not publish an effective date for these fares, and fares change from time to time. Check the current price on Oakville Transit’s fares page before you travel.
Oakville Transit lists the ways you can pay as exact cash, a PRESTO card loaded with funds or with an Oakville Transit monthly pass product, a PRESTO E-Ticket, PRESTO contactless using a credit or debit card, a valid paper transfer, a special purpose paper monthly pass, or a special purpose ticket.
Watch the contactless option. Oakville Transit describes tapping a credit card, a debit card or a phone or watch wallet as paying “the $4 fare”. That is the cash price, not the $3.50 PRESTO price. Contactless is convenient, but for an adult who rides often it costs 50 cents more per trip than a PRESTO card does.
A physical PRESTO card costs $4 in person at a customer service outlet or a ticket vending machine. A digital PRESTO card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet costs $0. Buying a physical card online also costs $4 and takes 7 to 10 business days to arrive. In Oakville, Oakville Transit lists these places to buy or load one: Oakville Town Hall at 1225 Trafalgar Road, which takes debit and credit only; the Oakville Transit office at 430 Wyecroft Road; Shoppers Drug Mart locations in Oakville; and the Oakville, Bronte and Clarkson GO stations.
Loading money is either instant or it is not, depending where you do it. Oakville Transit says loading through the PRESTO app’s “load now” feature, or in person at a customer service outlet or PRESTO vending machine, is instant. Loading online or by phone on 1-877-378-6123 means waiting four to seven hours before the funds are usable.
If part of your trip is on GO, the co-fare is free. Tap your PRESTO card and the discount is calculated for you. A valid paper GO single-ride ticket or day pass is also accepted as proof of payment. The discount lasts two hours if you start on Oakville Transit and three hours if you start on GO. GO group passes and GO e-tickets are not accepted for the co-fare.
Three other fare rules Oakville Transit publishes: care-A-van has been free since May 1, 2025 with a PRESTO card; a support person travels free when accompanying someone with a disability and shows the driver an Oakville Transit Support Person ID Card; and riders with a CNIB card travel free.
If the fare is a problem rather than an inconvenience, Halton Region runs SPLIT, Subsidized Passes for Low Income Transit, which can be put towards Oakville Transit tickets or monthly passes. Halton says it is for students, adults or seniors living with a low income in Halton, and for people receiving Ontario Works or Ontario Disability Support Program assistance. You can check eligibility with Halton’s online SPLIT application tool or by calling 311. Halton asks for proof of address, proof of income, and proof of status in Canada and date of birth, and wants those documents within 10 business days of the application. If you qualify, eligibility lasts one year and then you re-apply. Oakville Transit says SPLIT passes are no longer sold at Town Hall and are available at the Oakville Transit office.
What to bring
Exact cash, if you are paying cash. Drivers do not carry change, so a $5 bill for a $4 fare is a $5 fare.
If you are 65 or over, bring identification that shows your date of birth and take your PRESTO card to a service counter. Oakville Transit says you present the card there to have the senior age category set on it with your birthdate. Until that is done the card will not charge you $0.
Turning 20 needs nothing from you. Oakville Transit says the card defaults to an adult card.
Common mistakes
- Assuming free means free without a card. A youth or senior without a PRESTO card pays $4 in cash.
- Tapping a credit card and thinking you got the discount. Contactless is charged at $4.
- Buying a physical card for $4 when a digital card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet costs nothing.
- Loading online on the way to the bus stop. Online and phone loads take four to seven hours. The app’s “load now” and in-person loads are instant.
- Turning 65 and waiting for the discount to appear. The age category has to be set on the card at a service counter.
- Using a GO e-ticket or group pass and expecting the co-fare. Neither is accepted for it.
How long it takes
Free rides for riders 19 and under and 65 and over apply all day, seven days a week, on all Oakville Transit services, and show up on PRESTO as a $0 fare. The GO co-fare window is two hours from an Oakville Transit start and three hours from a GO start.
